Blasphemous 2 Mea Culpa DLC: Review

Having never experienced The Game Kitchen‘s Blasphemous 2 before picking up the Mea Culpa DLC, I can’t tell you the exact changes made to the base game. All I can do is tell you about my extreme highs and lows as I dove headfirst into Blasphemous 2.

For those that are not aware, Blasphemous 2 is a 2.5D side scrolling Metroidvania with extremely unforgiving combat not unlike the Dark Souls series.

Some of the new enemies are extremely tough, especially in big groups

The Mea Culpa DLC adds 2 new areas, a bunch of new enemies and bosses. New skills, abilities and a ton of secrets to find. Plus a new weapon from Blasphemous.

I stumbled upon the entrance to the new DLC while exploring the Streets of Wakes area. I found very quickly I didn’t have the right equipment or abilities. The Dual Daggers and Mace are necessary for all the platforming in the area. You can access The Mea Culpa DLC at any point but you will also need double jump and air dash before you will be able to make any real headway.

The DLC is accessable at anypoint during your game, however you will need certain abilities to make any real headway.

Upon entering the first area I was quickly bombarded by new enemies and death. A lot of death. I put in roughly 20 hours to get to the new area and instantly felt like I was starting again. The new enemies have some very powerful and hard to read attacks.

After exploring the new area and defeating the first boss, I got stuck. Just like the base game, there are no hints on what to do next. Just a locked door. So off I went to try and find a key. This is a common theme in Mea Culpa, just combing the original map looking for something that might have been missed. Ifound it frustrating as a lot of the new content had been added to the parts of the map that had already been explored and I could have sworn wasn’t there before I opened that first Mud Door. On the plus side if you haven’t finished Blasphemous 2 there will be lots to find along the way.

The new areas are just as gorgeous and creepy as the original game. However, I felt the platforming was a lot more fluid and it felt amazing nailing some of the harder parts.

I really dislike these litttle b*******

With all my praise for Mea Culpa, the new enemies left a lot to be desired. There are a couple of compulsory ‘arena’ fights that had me tearing my hair out. Only finding the cheapest tactics to cheese my way through. On a plus side the two new bosses require a lot more understanding of your moves and weaknesses. Don’t bother parrying, you will be bashed away while still taking damage and being stunned leading to certain death.

The famous Mea Culpa itself

While my time spent with Mea Culpa and Blasphemous 2 was frustrating to say the least it was still very enjoyable with the DLC adding a lot of new content. Even if you must go back through areas you have already explored, but what would a Metroidvania be without a little bit of backtracking?

Blaphamous 2 Mea Clupa DLC was reviewed on the Xbox Series X and is also available on Nintendo Switch, PC, Playstation 4 & 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

I would like to thank Team 17 for the review code.
