Big Helmet Heroes is created by Exalted Studios and published but Dear Villagers. I had the opportunity to preview Big Helmet Heroes last year and loved it, so I was looking forward to getting hands on with the finished product.

Big Helmet Heroes is a rowdy, action packed beat’em up that hits on both humor and fun, with plenty of exciting moments. No matter if you’re diving into local or online co-op, this hack and slash adventure offers a spirited experience while you battle through vast worlds filled with quirky enemies and over the top boss fights. Oh, and don’t forget you gotta save the princess.

Gameplay

Big Helmet Heroes is about well paced combat and teamwork. Whether you playing with someone else or in single player you have access to two knights to start any level. Each world that you explore offers new environments and enemies, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting. You will need to strategize as you battle large groups of enemies, by switching between your two knights. As you switch, the knight in reserve gains health as you take out enemies.

The controls are really easy to pick up and the combat allows for combos. With 4 different kinds of knights, each kind having a different fighting style and weapon, you use your combos and special to unleash on the bad guys. There’s a good balance between difficulty and fun, with progressively tougher enemies and creative ways to approach each level. Also like other beat’em ups the weapons you can pick up just make the combat more fun.

My Knights In Shining Armor

Big Helmet Heroes features 4 types of knights that you can choose from during your adventure. The first knight and the one you start with is the “Warrior” knight. He sports the sword and shield combo, to provide the perfect balance of offense and defense. Next we have the big and bad “Brute” knight. Slow moving he may be but wielding a massive two handed weapon, his hits are powerful. As quiet as they may be, next we have our stealthy “Rogue” knight. The rogue is our dual wielder, sporting daggers, knives and other pointy weapons. Last but not least the “Monk” knight is next. Wielding a staff his movements are fluid and agile.

On your adventure through different worlds, you will unlock more knights to use through your gameplay. Each Knight has an individual special that is unique to them. For example, a knight named “Giant” turns into a giant or “Chronos” slows down time. The game features more than 20 knights you can unlock as you progress. Each knight also sports a unique helmet, some more ridiculous than others.

Visuals

To be a 3d beat’em up, Big Helmet Heroes has a charming cartoonish art style. The worlds are colorful and silly, and each one has its on personality that separates it from other beat’em ups. They range from a medieval looking town, to a Egypt inspired desert to surfing on guitar in outer space, the whimsical environments and humor are a key part of the experience.

We also see the art style carried out in the character designs. From the knights to the enemies you face, all have unique features. This also extends to the bosses which no one boss os the same as the next.

Final Thoughts

I love an entertaining and fun beat’em up, something where you can control the pace, has enjoyable combat with some fun enemy and weapon variety. Big Helmet Heroes touches on all those things. The funny moments in the gameplay and cutscenes, to replaying levels to try to unlock the knight I missed, it’s all here. Not to mention the subtle yet amazing easter eggs.

This is one game I will recommend to everyone, you can play it by yourself or with friend. Also there is huge replayability as you can challenge yourself by beating each level on different difficulties. Big Helmet Heroes may not redefine the beat’em up genre but it definitely makes it fun and entertaining.

Thank you to Exalted Studios and Dear Villagers for providing us with a code. This review was done on an Xbox Series X. Big Helmet Heroes is available on Steam, Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo Switch, it releases on February 6th, 2025.
