Let’s School Review

Let’s School is an indie/simulation game, where you have to rebuild a school and make it successful. You have many tools at your disposal to make the way you want. You recruit students and teachers and set the weekly classes. I reviewed the Switch version, so some issues I have may only be present in the Switch version.

Game modes:

There are two game modes

Story Mode, where you start with a run down school and rebuild it up. I played on easy, since I was on a time restriction, that way you get more money. You get to build different buildings, and try to be the best school.

Sandbox Mode. My personal favorite mode. You start with an empty plot of land and decide what kind of school you want. I found it more fun as you have a goal to get to and have unlimited money to do it with. I chose to get students from all over with the goal being 50 students. I had to build different buildings and class rooms and bring different teachers to help bring all the students. I thought it was more enjoyable to play that way.

The Good:

Concept – I think Let’s School is a fun spin on the “city builder” genre. It can get challenging at times, which increases the fun level in my opinion. The two different modes give you endless play especially with Sandbox mode.

Graphics – It’s got cartoon style graphics, which work well for this game. The camera makes it so you can move around make it easy to see every angle.

The Bad:

Controls – Playing on Switch, the controls were a bit cumbersome. Assuming the controls are the same on other consoles. It’s difficult sometimes to know what button does what, sometime a tap does one thing but holding it does another. I even tried in handheld mode to see if I could use the touch screen, but you can’t. That would have made them much better to use.

Interface – There is a lot going on all over the screen. There are a lot of menus all popping up at once, and sometimes with the controls the way they are it was hard to see what menu or option I was on. For example, I was trying to set teachers to a classroom and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working. I had that menu open but the cursor was on a different menu. Especially in handheld mode, the screen can be overwhelming with the options.

Final Thoughts:

Let’s School is very fun and engaging. It does a good job of differentiating itself from other indie titles like this. But sometimes there is to much going on at once that can give you an overwhelming feeling. I also found it to be very stable, I did not have any crashes or noticeable frame rate drops. I would get maybe recommend PC for controls, as the Switch was a bit fiddly, but it’s definitely worth checking out.

Let’s School is releasing on July 16th on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4/PS5 and Switch. It previously released on PC in July 2023.
