Hypercharge Unboxed Title Screen

When you were little, you ever wish or had the thought that your toys came to life when you weren’t around? Movies like ‘Toy Story” and “Small Soldiers” only added more to your imagination and thoughts of this theory. Fake sleeping, cutting the lights off and on quickly to just to try to get a small glimpse of your toys moving on their own. Our imaginations truly ran wild when it came to our toys. Now that we have mostly grown older but still kids at heart, the amazing people at Digital Cybercherries brings us Hypercharge: Unboxed! Hypercharge: Unboxed was previously released on Switch and PC but now makes its way to Xbox.

This game truly is your childhood imagination brought to life with a controller. In Hypercharge, you control different toys to help defend against the army of Major Evil. You help his counterpart, Sergeant Ammo, as you defend the hypercores from attacks. You play through different levels ranging from a toy store, an attic, a bathroom, a shed and so many more.

Hypercharge Unboxed gun play

Hypercharge: Unboxed is a cooperative first and third person shooter with some tower defense added in. The game is developed by the British studio Digital Cybercherries, this is their first release. Hypercharge offers a varied array of guns from snipers, shotguns, machine guns and more. You can boost your weapons with attachments that spawn in the level or they can be purchased with credits you earn in that level. Hypercharge can be played solo or online with other people.

The gunplay in game is smooth and crisp like a shooter should be. The movement is good but can be a bit clunky sometimes, but that also could be that way because you are a toy. Along with weapon upgrades you also have buildables that you use in your effort to defend the hypercores. These buildables range from lego like bricks, a firepit, an anti air turret and more. You unlock more buildables and get upgrades to them as you complete objectives in each level. Hypercharge: Unboxed offers 4 different difficulties, Casual, Regular, Expert and Nightmare. Nightmare difficulty has to be unlocked, so the challenge is there.

Oh The Places We Will Go…

Back garden map in Hypercharge Unboxed

Each map that you play on is extremely detailed and no map looks the same as the last. Also there are multiple objectives on each map that you want to complete. Completing these objectives not only unlocks buildables but also new toys to play as and customizing options for those toys. Again I say the detail they put in this game is amazing. It’s the little things like the candy section in “The Dawn of Toys” or even having to flush the toilet as an objective in the map “No. 2”. Each map is littered with easter eggs, that give nods to our nostalgia.

One of my favorite modes was “Free Roam”. Here you had the opportunity to complete objectives that weren’t campaign or combat involved. After I had ran through a level during the campaign and I wasn’t able to get all the objectives, I would jump in free roam. For an average dad gamer like myself this gave the chance to complete those objectives I wasn’t able to do so during my campaign playthrough. Along with adventure mode, they offer a PVP mode called versus. Here is where you play against other players.

Along with the main objectives you have, optional objectives as well and secret collectibles like bobble heads. I have to attest, they were not easy to find. I searched some levels several times looking for those things. Depending how well you defend the hypercores, you get badges. On casual and regular your badges are bronze, silver, gold and platinum.. For Expert and Nightmare you get sapphire, emerald, ruby and diamond. Don’t think casual and regular difficulties are going to be a breeze either, some maps offer more of a challenge than others even on the lower difficulties.

Build A Toy...

Customise your toys in Hypercharge Unboxed

You ever put a different head on a toy than what it originally had, well you can do that in Hypercharge: Unboxed. Some of the things you unlock are different variations of the toys heads, skins and their packaging. Yes you can choose the package your toy busts out of. There are a total of 15 toys, you start the game with a select few and unlock the rest by earning badges and completing objectives. You can also change the color of your weapons to match your toys skin.

Toys, toys and more toys…

Hypercharge: Unboxed is like “Small Soldiers” and Call of Duty had a super cute destructive baby! This game has great replayability, easy to pick up and even better with friends. I spent the majority of my time in the PVE portion of the game, I really enjoyed that aspect. The controls were a little wonky at first but thankfully they offer the ability to change them to something more familiar. I can say that I will be playing Hypercharge: Unboxed for a long time. The challenging enemies, the detailed and cool maps, badge earning and much more have me wanting to come back. This game is so much fun and I can’t wait to see more people get the opportunity to jump into this game that brings them back to the days of having all out brawls with your toys. I will be telling everyone about how much fun this game is. I did my review on an Xbox series X and we were given this code by Digital Cybercherries Studios. On behalf of all of Gamer Social Club, we thank you for this opportunity to play and review your game.
