Rider’s Spirits is a port of the Super Famicom racing game Bike Daisuki! Hashiriya Kon released only in Japan in 1994. Even back in 1994 this game was considered a Super Mario Kart racing clone. I kind of have to agree with that analysis. Mario Kart just does it a bit better.

The game offers both single-player and couch co-op experiences, featuring five distinct game modes:

Rider’s GP: This mode follows the grand prix race format, where you compete across multiple tracks, earning points based on your race placements. The racer with the highest total points at the end claims victory in the tournament. Winning unlocks more challenging GP races.

Time Trial: Practice and refine your skills on the tracks while racing against yourself to achieve the fastest time possible.

Battle Race (2 Players): Engage in head-to-head competition against a friend, duking it out to cross the finish line first

Endurance Race: Select two racers and aim to maintain first place while managing your fuel gauge effectively. Utilize pit stops strategically and switch out racers as necessary to endure the long race.

Chicken Run (2 Players): Players descend down a ramp and must skillfully halt as close to the edge as possible without crossing over. It’s a test of nerve and precision..

The game allows you to chose from 8 different riders. Each of the different character types have their own stats for speed, handling and acceleration.

As with other Super Famicom game ports, this one comes with some special options. One particularly handy feature is the rewind option in the menu, perfect for those moments when you mess up during a race. I may or may not have relied on this feature quite heavily…

Additionally, the game incorporates pit-stops on the track, where you can refuel and pick up items. Mastering game mechanics like drifting and performing wheelies will also be crucial for claiming the title of the fastest biker out there.

You’re also able to switch the view while racing from a first person view which lets you check up on the competition behind you and a more traditional 3rd person view.

Overall if you’re looking for some SNES style racing nostalgia you may find it with this game.

*Jamie spent 2 hours racing back in time. 5 out of 20 achievements were earned for a total of 250 GamerScore. A review copy was provided and played on an Xbox Series X.
