Project Tower is a third person shooter developed by Yummy Games that mixes bullet hell gameplay with a unique morphing ability. You play as a prisoner, fighting against an alien species known as the Hiks. You will need to fight your way to the top of the tower to win your freedom. This game is set to release in Q3 2024.

The Good:
Despite the demo being around an hour long I had a lot of fun playing this game. The ability to morph into various alien creatures and mechanical objects is such an interesting game mechanic. One second, I’m using my gun and energy sword to take out enemies, the next I turn into an alien slug and zoom around the field.
The highlight for this mechanic in terms of the demo is turning into a bipedal fire shooting alien. Being able to one shot the enemies and sprint and jump around as this enemy was extremely satisfying and made me want to continue playing as this alien for quite some time.

The combat whilst simple felt quite receptive to play. My favourite aspect of combat is the energy sword like melee weapon. I’m personally a sucker for melee combat so even in this game clearly intended to be played with guns and morph abilities I will continue to try to kill enemies with melee until it’s not viable anymore
The Cutscenes for this game were rather short for the demo but each one managed to set the scene perfectly, in particular the first one. There was frame dropping during these cutscenes, but they were so cool I found it hard to care.

The bad:
There’s really not that much that can be said that I would consider a negative for the game, the only thing that I would say in that regard is that the game will need to become much more stable to prevent framerate drops.

Things to be improved:
When it comes to improvements for this game, only three things come to mind. Aside from the third point in this section I wouldn’t consider any of these an existing negative for the game, just personal opinions on ways the game can be improved come the full release.
Firstly, the camera angle when aiming needs to be slightly zoomed out. Several times during the Krynnosaurus boss fight when i was aiming down the gun this enemy did a tail flick attack that launched projectiles into my blind spot, zooming out the camera would be able to fix this particular issue.
Secondly, the ability to change morph abilities at will. The morphing ability is one of the coolest mechanics i’ve ever seen in a game, it’s super unique and it runs super smoothly. The only downside and this could be because this is a demo is that i couldn’t swap between the various morph abilities. If this is changed in the main game I could see it bringing significant replayability value to the game.
And finally, the performance. The demo itself is really fun, however something that I noticed rather frequently is large lag spikes. If this game can maintain a solid 60 frames per second, then I could see this being one of the best bullet hell games on the market.

In conclusion:
I have been historically bad at bullet hell games and overall tried to avoid them as I’ve always considered them “not my thing”. But Project Tower has changed my view on the bullet hell genre as a whole with its unique gameplay mechanics and fascinating game design. I can’t wait to see what the full game brings to the table.
