The Chinese Room have created an amazing horror experience with Still Wakes the Deep. I only have one bad thing to say about it so we will get it out of the way first. The default video settings that were chosen made the game unplayable for me. Motion Blur, Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration are all turned on by default, I don’t get motion sick, but this had me spinning and wanting to abandon Still Wakes the Deep before I had even begun. That’s it. Everything else about Still Wakes the Deep is incredible.

The story takes place on the Beria D, an oil rig out in the Northen Sea during the last days of 1975. You take control of “Caz” a Scottish electrician who is hiding out on the rig after an altercation at the pub puts a man in hospital.
The game is full of incredible voice acting and amazing dialog, there are even English subtitles for those of us that don’t know the colloquialisms of Scotland during the 70’s and there is even an achievement for completing the game in Scottish Gaelic.
Still Wakes the Deep is a first-person environmental horror game that assaults your senses right from the start, as you walk into the communal showers, and you are greeted with a scene straight out of a nightmare, then there is an achievement for you staying in there for an uncomfortable amount of time.

The story takes place after a catastrophic accident on the Beria D. You must navigate the wreckage while looking for survivors and trying to find a way off the rig. There is no combat in Still Wakes the Deep and its better for it. The unknown force surrounding you cannot be fought, instead you must sneak using air ducts and creating distractions using thrown objects. If you are spotted its games over, there is no stopping what is coming your way. However, it’s not the monsters that make Still Wakes the Deep creepy.

Still Wakes the Deep is totally void of music, and its amazing. There is no slow building of noise indicating what is coming, you are in constant fear of what is around every corner. You are surrounded by the creaking of steel, buzzing of wires and the screams of whatever has been awoken from the deep. Still Wakes the Deep also touches on other fears, tight spaces, fire, heights, drowning and even spiders, it has it all.

Still Wakes the Deep is an incredible attack on the senses and keep you on your toes for the whole ride. It has become my number #1 horror game of 2024. If you are a horror fan it is a must!

Still Wakes the Deep was reviewed on the Xbox Series X.
