Overview: Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is the HD remaster of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for the 3DS. It is the 2nd game in the series. You play as Luigi using his Poltergeist 5000 to capture ghosts in 5 different mansions trying to uncover the mysteries of the dark moon.
The good:
Visuals: You can tell they put care into updating the visuals of Luigi’s Mansion 2. They look great on the Switch. The contrast between the light and dark look great both in handheld mode and on screen. And the Mario universe games are always top tier in their graphics.

Sound design: The creepy music goes great with the look of the game. The sound effects Luigi makes between being happy and being scared will bring a smile to your face and make you laugh. Thunder in the background goes great with the horror aesthetic. Each type of ghost has their own “voice” in the game.
Catching ghosts: The heart of the game, and this is so much fun and a joy to do. Luigi’s weapon, the Poltergeist 5000, is a mix between a Proton Pack from Ghostbusters and a vacuum cleaner, which you use along with other tools needed to startle, and find hidden ghosts.
Lots to do: Besides doing the story missions, there are gems to collect in every mansion. Most of them require you to solve puzzles to find them, however some are easy and right there in front of you. There are also Boos hidden in each level – 1 per level and you have to find them then catch them. There is also a multiplayer mode where you can go up the ScareScraper battling ghosts with up to 4 friends online.

Comedy: As I mentioned there are lots of spots in the game that had me laughing. With the updated visuals you really get to see Luigi’s expressions when stuff happens, and all the funny stuff the ghosts do around the mansions.
The Bad:
Controls: My biggest issue with Luigi’s Mansion 2 was that the controls were not updated very well. It still utilizes X and B to look up and down. You can use the right stick to move, but using the right stick can actually make the game harder. When using the right stick I found myself fighting the left stick.
Lack of new features: At $60 I was hoping to see some new features added to the game. But it is just an HD port of the 3DS game. As someone who has beaten both games, it was great to play through again but upsetting there was nothing new there.

Final Thoughts:
All in all Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is still a great game. If you enjoyed Luigi’s Mansion 3 on the Switch, you’ll enjoy this game too. If you never played the 3DS version I highly recommend to pick it up and play it. If you enjoyed the 3DS you will enjoy this version with the updated graphics.
